Not all Atlas models are created equal. Before you hitch up, check your owner's manual or door sticker.

• The 5,000 lb Club: Models equipped with the 3.6L V6 or the newer 2024+ 2.0L Turbo (with factory tow package) are typically rated for 5,000 lbs.

• The 2,000 lb Limit: Older 4-cylinder models (pre-2024) or models without the factory hitch receiver are often limited to just 2,000 lbs. If you fall into this category, we recommend sticking to our Pop-Up Campers or Teardrop Trailers selection.

What is the "Safe Towing Zone" for an Atlas?

Just because your Atlas can tow 5,000 lbs doesn't mean you should pull a 5,000 lb trailer. You must account for passengers, cargo, and the tongue weight of the trailer (which pushes down on your rear suspension).

For a comfortable towing experience with a family of four in the car, we recommend staying in the Under 3,500 lbs category. This leaves you plenty of power for highway merging and hills.

• Perfect Matches: Look for single-axle units like the Forest River Wolf Pup or the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH. These give you bunks for the kids and a queen bed for you, all while weighing under 3,500 lbs loaded.

• Aerodynamic Options: The Atlas is a unibody SUV, so wind resistance matters. Aerodynamic trailers like the Winnebago Micro Minnie or R-Pod tow significantly better behind an SUV than boxier "stick and tin" trailers.

Essential Equipment for VW Towing

To tow safely with an Atlas, you will likely need two key upgrades:

1. Brake Controller: Most travel trailers have electric brakes, but the Atlas doesn't always come with a controller to activate them. Our Service Department can install a wireless or wired brake controller to keep you legal and safe.

2. Weight Distribution Hitch: This is critical for unibody SUVs. It spreads the trailer's tongue weight across all four wheels of your Atlas, preventing the rear end from sagging and keeping your steering sharp.
