P400 (Inline 6) & V8 Models: The sweet spot for towing. If you have the P400 (MHEV) or the V8, your Defender is likely rated for the maximum 8,201 lbs. This allows you to tow full-size Travel Trailers Under 8,500 lbs with ease.
P300 (4-Cylinder): The smaller engine is still capable but typically rated for 7,716 lbs. While strong, we recommend sticking to Travel Trailers Under 7,500 lbs to maintain highway performance.
The Wheelbase Factor:
- Defender 130: Excellent stability for long trailers due to the extended length.
- Defender 90: The short wheelbase makes it amazing off-road but "twitchy" when towing long campers. If you drive a 90, stick to shorter Off-Road Trailers under 20 feet.

The Discovery (Full-Size): Family Luxury

The Discovery (not to be confused with the smaller Discovery Sport) is the ultimate 7-seat tow vehicle.

P360 (Inline 6): Like the Defender, the 6-cylinder Discovery is rated for 8,200 lbs. It pairs perfectly with luxury aerodynamic trailers like Airstream or Lance.

Tech That Makes Towing Easy

Land Rover offers some of the best towing technology on the market.

Air Suspension: Standard on most 6-cylinder models, the self-leveling air suspension keeps your vehicle flat regardless of tongue weight, ensuring your headlights stay aimed at the road.
Advanced Tow Assist: This optional feature allows you to "steer" the trailer while reversing using the rotary knob on your center console, taking the mental math out of backing up.

Essential Equipment Check

Brake Controller: Most Land Rovers do not come with a dashboard-integrated brake controller. You must install one to legally tow a trailer with brakes. We recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro, which can be installed discreetly to preserve your luxury interior.
Hitch Receiver: Many Defenders come with the "Tow Package" but the actual receiver hitch (the square hole) might be a dealer-installed accessory. Check your rear bumper—if you see a flat cover plate, you may need to visit our Service Department or your dealer to install the receiver logic.
