This is because the rear differential helps stabilize the vehicle under load, and without it, the weight limit is lower to protect the suspension and transmission.

• The 5,000 lb Club (AWD Models): If you have an AWD model (standard on TrailSport, Elite, Black Edition, and available on others), you can unlock a 5,000 lb towing capacity. This puts you in the "Sweet Spot" for single-axle family bunkhouses.

  • Best Match: Forest River Wolf Pup, Jayco Jay Flight SLX, or Winnebago Micro Minnie.

The "Hidden" Requirement: The Transmission Cooler

For owners of 2016–2022 Pilots (Generation 3), there is a critical catch. Even if you have an AWD model, you may not be "Ready to Tow" 5,000 lbs right away.

• The ATF Cooler Rule: On many older trims (especially those with the 6-speed or 9-speed transmission), the vehicle is rated for 3,500 lbs from the factory. To legally and safely reach 5,000 lbs, you must install the optional Honda Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Cooler.

• The Risk: Towing heavy loads without this cooler can overheat your transmission and void your warranty.

• 2023+ Models: The new generation (2023–Present) with the 10-speed automatic typically comes more robustly equipped, especially in TrailSport trim which includes recovery points and a standard Class III hitch receiver.
