Ford Explorer Towing Guide: The Jack of All Trades

The Ford Explorer is one of the most popular SUVs in North America for a reason. Since switching to a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) architecture in 2020, it has become a formidable tow vehicle, offering better balance and stability than its front-wheel-drive competitors. Whether you are hauling a boat to the lake or a camper to the mountains, the Explorer is ready.

At Leisure Days RV Group, we often recommend the Explorer to families who want a sporty drive without sacrificing utility. However, a recent model refresh has changed the towing numbers significantly. It is vital to know if you are driving a 2025+ model or a 2020–2024 model before you hitch up.

2020 – 2024 Models: The "Peak Towing" Era

If you are shopping for a used Explorer or own one from these years, you may have higher capacity depending on your engine.

  • 3.0L EcoBoost V6 (ST, Platinum, King Ranch): These high-performance models are the towing kings of the lineup. When equipped with the Class IV Trailer Tow Package, they are rated for a class-leading 5,600 lbs. This extra capacity allows you to tow heavier bunkhouses that other mid-size SUVs can't touch.

  • 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 (XLT, Limited, Timberline): Don't underestimate the 4-cylinder. It packs 300 hp and is rated for a respectable 5,300 lbs.

  • 3.3L Hybrid: The fuel-efficient Hybrid model is capable but limited to 5,000 lbs.

2025 – Present: The Standardized 5,000 lb Club

For the 2025 model year refresh, Ford simplified the lineup.

  • All Engines (2.3L & 3.0L): Regardless of whether you buy the base Active trim or the high-performance ST, the towing capacity is now standardized at 5,000 lbs across the board.

  • The Good News: The Class III Trailer Tow Package is now standard on every model, meaning you don't have to hunt for a specific "tow package" on the dealer lot—every 2025 Explorer is ready to tow 5,000 lbs right out of the box.

What Can I Tow With a Ford Explorer?

  • For ST / Platinum Owners (5,600 lbs): That extra 600 lbs matters. You can tow a Grand Design Imagine XLS 21BHE or a Jayco Jay Feather Micro. These premium trailers often tip the scales at 4,500–5,000 lbs loaded, which would be too heavy for a standard 5,000 lb SUV but fits perfectly behind a 2020–2024 Explorer ST.

  • For Standard Models (5,000 lbs): You are in the sweet spot for single-axle family campers. The Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS is a best-seller for Explorer owners, offering bunk beds and a queen bed in a package that weighs roughly 3,500 lbs.

  • For Timberline Owners: The Explorer Timberline features off-road suspension and a Torsen limited-slip rear axle. Match it with a rugged No Boundaries (NoBo) trailer to take your campsite off the beaten path.

Critical Equipment: The Brake Controller

  • The "Tow Tech" Package: Many newer Explorers (especially 2025s and high-trim 2022+ models) may come with a "Tow Technology Package" that includes specific towing drive modes, but they often do not have a physical trailer brake controller on the dash.

  • The Fix: Check your dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. If you do not see a "Trailer Brake" squeeze tab, you must install an aftermarket controller to tow a travel trailer legally. Our Service Department recommends the Redarc Tow-Pro, which integrates seamlessly with the Explorer's modern interior.

The "RWD Architecture" Advantage

Why does the Explorer tow better than some competitors?

  • Balance: Because the engine power is sent to the rear wheels (or all four), the Explorer pushes from the back rather than pulling from the front. This provides better traction on boat ramps and less "torque steer" when accelerating with a heavy trailer attached.
