The Golden Rule: Do You Have the Heavy-Duty Package?

Before you look at any trailers, you must verify one critical detail: Does your Expedition have the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package? This single option changes your towing reality completely.

• With Heavy-Duty Tow Package (9,000+ lbs): If your vehicle has the 536 Option Code (Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package), you are rated for massive weights.

  • Standard Wheelbase 4x2: Up to 9,300 lbs (9,600 lbs for 2025 models).

  • Expedition MAX: Up to 9,000 lbs.

  • Includes: 3.73 rear axle ratio, integrated brake controller, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and an upgraded radiator.

• Without Heavy-Duty Tow Package (6,000 lbs): If you have a standard hitch without the package, your towing capacity is capped at just 6,000 lbs (Standard) or 6,300 lbs (MAX). This is a massive 3,000 lb difference. Do not attempt to tow a heavy trailer if you lack this package.

Standard Expedition vs. Expedition MAX: Stability vs. Capacity

• Standard Expedition (Short Wheelbase): Offers the highest theoretical towing capacity (9,300–9,600 lbs) because the vehicle itself is lighter. It is excellent for maneuverability but can feel slightly less planted with very long trailers (30+ feet).

• Expedition MAX (Long Wheelbase): Rated slightly lower at 9,000 lbs due to the added weight of the vehicle body. However, the longer wheelbase makes the MAX significantly more stable on the highway, resisting trailer sway better than the shorter model. For large family bunkhouses, we often prefer the stability of the MAX over the extra 300 lbs of capacity.

What Can I Tow With 9,000 lbs?

With a properly equipped Expedition, you have access to 90% of the travel trailers on our lot.

• Full-Size Luxury Trailers: You can comfortably tow premium units like the Grand Design Reflection or Jayco Eagle HT. These trailers feature triple slide-outs, islands, and heavy insulation, weighing 7,000–8,500 lbs loaded.

• Toy Haulers: The Expedition is one of the few SUVs capable of pulling a Travel Trailer Toy Hauler. Models like the Forest River Grey Wolf 26RR allow you to bring motorcycles or a golf cart along for the trip.

• Timberline Off-Roaders: The Expedition Timberline features the High-Output engine (440 hp) and off-road suspension. Match it with a rugged, high-clearance trailer like the Ibex or No Boundaries (NoBo) for deep backcountry camping.

• Pro Trailer Backup Assist: Found on most equipped models, this allows you to steer the trailer in reverse by turning a small knob on the dashboard while the car handles the steering wheel.

• Smart Trailer Tow Connector: This system alerts you via the dashboard if a trailer light burns out or if the connection is loose, saving you from a traffic stop.

Essential Equipment Check

• Brake Controller: If you have the Heavy-Duty package, the controller is integrated into the dash. If you are towing with a standard 6,000 lb model, you likely need to install an aftermarket controller to be legal.

• Weight Distribution Hitch: Ford requires a Weight Distribution Hitch for any trailer over 6,000 lbs. This is mandatory to maintain your warranty and safety on the road.
