• The 5.3L V8 (The Capacity King): Surprisingly, the smaller V8 often offers the highest towing capacity. When equipped with the Max Trailering Package, a 2WD 5.3L Tahoe is rated for a class-leading 8,400 lbs. This is the standard engine for LS, LT, Z71, and Premier models.

• The 6.2L V8 (The Muscle): Standard on High Country and available on RST/Z71/Premier, this engine delivers 420 hp. While it offers massive passing power, its heavier weight slightly reduces towing capacity to roughly 8,100 – 8,300 lbs.

• The 3.0L Duramax Diesel (The Efficiency Master): The "Baby Duramax" is a favorite among RVers. Rated for 8,000 – 8,200 lbs, it matches the massive torque of the 6.2L V8 (495 lb-ft in 2025 models) but delivers it at low RPMs for effortless highway cruising and incredible fuel economy.

The "Max Trailering Package" Rule

This is the most important detail for Tahoe owners. You cannot simply assume your Tahoe can tow 8,400 lbs. You must check for the Max Trailering Package (Option Code NHT).

• With the Package: You get the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, enhanced cooling radiator, and (on 4WD models) a 2-speed active transfer case. This unlocks the full 8,000+ lb potential.

• Without the Package: Your capacity often drops to the 7,600 – 7,900 lb range, and more importantly, you lack the factory brake controller required to tow legally.

What Can I Tow With a Chevy Tahoe?

• Wide-Body Bunkhouses: With 8,400 lbs of capacity, you can tow spacious trailers like the Jayco White Hawk 29BH or Grand Design Imagine. These units utilize the full 8-foot width for deeper slide-outs and roomy interiors.

• Airstream Trailers: The Tahoe is the classic tow vehicle for an Airstream Flying Cloud or International. The SUV’s independent rear suspension provides a smooth ride that protects the riveted aluminum shell.

Advanced Towing Tech

Chevy leads the industry in camera technology. If your Tahoe is equipped with the Advanced Trailering System, you have tools that make towing safer.

• Transparent Trailer: By mounting an accessory camera on the back of your RV, the center screen stitches the video to make your trailer appear "invisible," allowing you to see traffic directly behind you.

• Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring: The system can monitor the air pressure and temperature of your trailer tires, alerting you to a blowout before it happens.

Critical Equipment Check

• Brake Controller:

  • Factory Installed: Located to the left of the steering wheel. If you have this, you are ready to go.

  • Aftermarket: If your Tahoe has a coin holder instead of trailer buttons, you must install an aftermarket controller. Our Service Department recommends the Redarc Tow-Pro or Curt Echo to maintain a clean dashboard look.

• Weight Distribution Hitch: GM requires a Weight Distribution Hitch for any trailer over 7,000 lbs. Given the Tahoe's soft rear suspension (especially on models with Air Ride), a WDH is essential to keep your steering stable and safe.
