BMW X5 & X7 Towing Guide: The Ultimate Towing Machines
When you think of towing, you might picture a pickup truck. But the BMW X5 and BMW X7 are widely considered the best-handling tow vehicles in the world. Built on rigid unibody platforms with available self-leveling air suspension, these "Sports Activity Vehicles" offer a towing experience that is smoother and more stable than many half-ton trucks.
At Leisure Days RV Group, we specialize in pairing premium vehicles with premium trailers. Whether you are driving the athletic X5 or the flagship X7, we have the perfect Airstream or luxury coach to match your German engineering.

Know Your Limit: The "Factory Hitch" Rule
Before you browse inventory, you must understand how BMW rates its vehicles. The numbers below generally apply only if your vehicle was ordered with the Factory Trailer Hitch option (Option Code 3AC).
-
BMW X5 (Gas & M60i): Rated for a massive 7,200 lbs. This applies to both the inline-6 (xDrive40i) and the V8 (M60i) models.
-
BMW X7 (All Engines): The longer, heavier X7 bumps the capacity up to 7,500 lbs.
Its longer wheelbase makes it an incredibly stable platform for 25-to-27 foot trailers. -
The PHEV Exception (xDrive45e / xDrive50e): If you own the Plug-in Hybrid X5, your capacity is lower due to the battery weight.
-
xDrive45e (2021–2023): Rated for roughly 5,952 lbs.
-
xDrive50e (2024+): Rated for 5,952 lbs.
-
Best Match: Travel Trailers Under 6,000 lbs like the Winnebago Micro Minnie.
-
The "Invisible" Hitch Problem
Many BMW owners are surprised to learn they can't simply bolt a hitch on later and tow 7,200 lbs.
-
Factory Hitch: Includes upgraded engine cooling, trailer stability software, and robust frame reinforcements. It also usually deletes the "Kick-to-Open" tailgate feature.
-
Aftermarket Hitch: If you install a "Stealth Hitch" or aftermarket receiver on a BMW without the factory tow package, you may lack the necessary cooling and stability software. We typically recommend limiting aftermarket setups to 3,500–4,000 lbs to be safe.
Critical Equipment: The Missing Brake Controller
This is the most common hurdle for BMW owners.
-
The Reality: Even with the factory tow package, BMWs do not come with an integrated trailer brake controller on the dashboard.
-
The Fix: To tow a trailer over 3,000 lbs, you must have a controller.
-
Wireless: The Curt Echo is a popular choice for lease owners—it plugs into the 7-way socket and uses your phone as the controller, requiring no wiring.
-
Wired: Our Service Department can install a Redarc Tow-Pro, which places a tiny, factory-look knob on your console while hiding the hardware out of sight.
-
What Can I Tow With a BMW?
You need a trailer that matches your X5 or X7 in both style and aerodynamics.
-
Airstream: The aerodynamic aluminum shell of an Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB or 25RB cuts through the wind, preserving your BMW's performance and fuel economy.
-
Lance Travel Trailers: Known for their low center of gravity and premium construction, Lance trailers (like the 1575 or 1985) are often cited by BMW owners as the perfect handling match.
-
Grand Design Imagine XLS: X7 owners can easily tow a Grand Design Imagine XLS 23LDE, enjoying a spacious rear living layout while staying well under the 7,500 lb limit.
The Air Suspension Advantage
If your X5 or X7 has the 2-Axle Air Suspension (standard on X7 and X5 xDrive50e):
-
Auto-Leveling: The vehicle automatically detects the tongue weight and pumps up the rear airbags to keep the car perfectly level.
-
No "WDH" Struggle: While we still recommend a sway-control hitch, the air suspension does the heavy lifting of keeping your headlights aimed at the road, eliminating the rear sag common in other SUVs.
