• BMW X5 (Gas & M60i): Rated for a massive 7,200 lbs. This applies to both the inline-6 (xDrive40i) and the V8 (M60i) models.

• BMW X7 (All Engines): The longer, heavier X7 bumps the capacity up to 7,500 lbs. Its longer wheelbase makes it an incredibly stable platform for 25-to-27 foot trailers.

• The PHEV Exception (xDrive45e / xDrive50e): If you own the Plug-in Hybrid X5, your capacity is lower due to the battery weight.

  • xDrive45e (2021–2023): Rated for roughly 5,952 lbs.

  • xDrive50e (2024+): Rated for 5,952 lbs.

The "Invisible" Hitch Problem

Many BMW owners are surprised to learn they can't simply bolt a hitch on later and tow 7,200 lbs.

• Aftermarket Hitch: If you install a "Stealth Hitch" or aftermarket receiver on a BMW without the factory tow package, you may lack the necessary cooling and stability software. We typically recommend limiting aftermarket setups to 3,500–4,000 lbs to be safe.

Critical Equipment: The Missing Brake Controller

• The Reality: Even with the factory tow package, BMWs do not come with an integrated trailer brake controller on the dashboard.

• The Fix: To tow a trailer over 3,000 lbs, you must have a controller.
