• With "Trailer Tow Group" (3,600 lbs): If your van came from the factory with the Trailer Tow Group, you are rated for 3,600 lbs. This package was more than just a hitch; it included a Class II Receiver, a Wiring Harness, and most importantly, Load-Leveling and Height-Control Suspension.

  • How to Check: Look at your rear shock absorbers. If they are thick "Nivomat" self-leveling shocks, you likely have the package.

• Without Tow Group (2,000 lbs): If your van did not come with the factory package, your towing capacity is often limited to 2,000 lbs unless you upgrade your equipment. Without the heavy-duty cooling and suspension, a 3,000 lb trailer can cause the rear end to sag dangerously and overheat the transmission.

The "Stow 'n Go" Factor & Payload

The Grand Caravan is famous for its Stow 'n Go seating, but this convenience comes with a towing trade-off.

• The Payload Trap: The seats fold into the floor, which means there is no solid rear axle housing like a truck. This limits your payload capacity.

• The Math: If you load the van with 7 people (1,050 lbs) and luggage (200 lbs), you have likely used up almost all your payload capacity. This leaves zero room for the trailer's tongue weight.
