The Golden Rule: Gas vs. Hybrid

This is the most critical section for Pacifica owners. The badge on your liftgate determines your towing reality.

• Gas V6 (The Towing Champ): If you drive the standard 3.6L V6 gas model, you are driving one of the most capable towing minivans on the market. When equipped with the factory Trailer Tow Group, you are rated for a massive 3,600 lbs. This extra capacity allows you to tow lightweight bunkhouse trailers that other vans can't handle.

• Pacifica Hybrid (The "No Tow" Zone): If you own the Pacifica Hybrid (PHEV), Chrysler explicitly states that towing is NOT recommended.

  • The Reason: The heavy battery pack uses up your payload capacity, and the specialized eFlite transmission is designed for efficiency, not hauling heavy loads.

  • Our Advice: Use your Hybrid for bike racks or cargo carriers only. Do not attempt to tow a travel trailer, as you risk voiding your warranty.

The "Trailer Tow Group" Advantage

To safely reach the 3,600 lb limit, your gas Pacifica needs more than just a hitch ball. It needs the Trailer-Tow Group. This factory package includes four critical upgrades:

1. Heavy-Duty Radiator: To keep the engine cool on steep grades.

2. Trailer Sway Damping: Stability control software that detects and corrects trailer sway automatically.

3. 2-Inch Hitch Receiver: A proper Class III receiver that fits standard weight distribution hitches (unlike the smaller 1.25" hitches found on some aftermarket installs).

4. 7-Pin/4-Pin Wiring Harness: Ready to control trailer brakes and lights right from the factory.

The "Payload" Trap

Even with 3,600 lbs of pulling power, you must watch your Payload Capacity.

• The Math: Your payload (found on the driver's door sticker) must carry Passengers + Cargo + Trailer Tongue Weight.

• The Scenario: A family of 5 (800 lbs) + gear (200 lbs) leaves very little room for tongue weight.

• The Fix: Stick to trailers with a tongue weight of under 360 lbs. Avoid heavy single-axle trailers that put too much weight on the rear suspension, causing the van to sag.

What Can I Tow With a Gas Pacifica?

• Pop-Up Campers: The Rockwood Freedom or Jayco Jay Sport are perfect matches. They fold down behind the van to reduce wind drag and weigh 1,800–2,500 lbs, keeping you well within your safety margins.
