But with the launch of the Generation 4 (2024 – Present) models, everything has changed. The V6 is gone, replaced by Turbocharged and Hybrid powertrains.
At Leisure Days RV Group, we know that Tacoma owners are loyal. Whether you are trading in your 2018 for a brand-new 2025 Trailhunter or sticking with your trusty Gen 3, this guide clarifies exactly what you can tow.

Generation 4 (2024 – Present): The Turbo Era
The new Tacoma is more powerful, but surprisingly, its maximum towing capacity has slightly decreased compared to the previous generation.
-
i-FORCE 2.4L Turbo (6,500 lbs): The standard turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is now the towing volume leader. In the SR5, TRD PreRunner, and XtraCab configurations, it tops out at 6,500 lbs.
Most Double Cab models (TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road) are rated for 6,400 lbs. -
The Upgrade: Unlike the old V6 which needed high RPMs to pull, this turbo engine makes its torque low in the rev range, making towing feel much less strained.
-
-
i-FORCE MAX Hybrid (6,000 lbs): Here is the surprise: The most powerful engine tows less. The i-FORCE MAX Hybrid (standard on TRD Pro and Trailhunter) produces massive torque (465 lb-ft), but the weight of the battery system lowers the max towing capacity to 6,000 lbs.
-
Best Match: Rugged off-grid trailers like the No Boundaries (NoBo) 19 Series or Ibex.
-
Generation 3 (2016 – 2023): The V6 Legend
If you are shopping used, the previous generation is still a capable beast.
-
3.5L V6 (6,400 – 6,800 lbs): The outgoing V6 was rated for up to 6,800 lbs (Access Cab 2WD) or commonly 6,400 lbs (Double Cab 4WD).
While it requires high RPMs to climb hills, it is a proven reliable platform. -
The "Gear Hunting" Fix: Gen 3 owners often complain about the transmission "hunting" for gears while towing. We recommend towing in S-Mode (4th or 5th gear) and using the ECT Power button to hold gears longer.
The "Payload Trap" (Critical for All Generations)
The Tacoma is famous for being tough, but it has a "soft" spot: Payload Capacity.
-
The Math: Most Double Cab Tacomas have a payload of 1,100 – 1,300 lbs. This number must carry You + Passengers + Gear + Trailer Tongue Weight.
-
The Reality: If you buy a 5,000 lb trailer, it will have a tongue weight of ~600 lbs. That leaves only ~600 lbs for your family and camping gear in the truck bed.
-
The Fix: Avoid heavy "half-ton towable" trailers. Stick to campers under 4,500 lbs dry to ensure you don't overload your truck's rear axle.
Essential Equipment: The Brake Controller
-
Gen 4 (2024+): Finally! Toyota now offers an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller on the dashboard (Standard on higher trims, optional on others).
This is a massive improvement over the old model. -
Gen 3 (2016–2023): Most Gen 3 trucks did not come with a factory controller. You likely need to install one. Our Service Department recommends the Redarc Tow-Pro, which installs with a factory-style knob, or the Tekonsha P3 for precise control.
What Can I Tow With a Tacoma?
-
Rugged Overlanders: The Trailhunter and TRD Pro are stylistically matched to our Off-Road Trailers. Units like the Geo Pro G19FB or Ibex feature aggressive tires and high clearance that look perfect behind a Tacoma.
-
Single-Axle Bunkhouses: For families, the Winnebago Micro Minnie 1800BH (7-foot wide) is a better choice than wide-body trailers. It offers less wind resistance, which is crucial for the mid-size Tacoma engine.
-
Teardrops & Hybrids: To maximize fuel economy, stay low. A nuCamp T@B 400 or a Rockwood Roo Hybrid keeps the weight manageable and the wind drag low.
