Nissan Frontier Towing Guide: The Last of the V6s
In a world of turbochargers and hybrids, the Nissan Frontier stands alone. It is the only mid-size truck that still comes standard with a powerful, naturally aspirated 3.8L V6 engine. For towing, this means consistent power delivery without the heat soak or complexity of a turbo system.
At Leisure Days RV Group, we often recommend the Frontier to buyers who want "old school" reliability with modern capability. Whether you are driving the rugged PRO-4X or the value-packed SV, this truck is a serious hauler—if you have the right equipment.

2025 vs. 2022–2024: A Capacity Bump
While the engine has remained the same (310 hp / 281 lb-ft), Nissan has optimized the chassis for the 2025 model year, resulting in a higher tow rating.
-
2025 Models (Max 7,150 lbs): The refreshed 2025 Frontier is rated for up to 7,150 lbs (King Cab S 2WD).
Even the popular Crew Cab PRO-4X sees a rating of 6,680 lbs, placing it firmly in the "Sweet Spot" for mid-size towing. -
2022 – 2024 Models (Max ~6,720 lbs):
The previous model years top out around 6,720 lbs for 2WD models, with 4WD Crew Cabs typically hovering around 6,200 – 6,400 lbs. -
The Advantage: Unlike the new Tacoma Hybrid which lost capacity, the Frontier remains consistent. You don't have to worry about battery weight eating into your limits.
-
The "Tow-Haul" Mode Advantage
Every modern Frontier features a dedicated Tow-Haul Mode switch (usually near the shifter or on the dash).
-
What it does: It holds gears longer and aggressively downshifts when you tap the brakes.
-
Why it matters: Because the Frontier uses a 9-speed automatic, this mode is essential to stop the transmission from "hunting" for gears on highway inclines, keeping your transmission fluid temperatures safe.
Critical Equipment: The Missing Controller
This is the most common surprise for new Frontier owners.
-
The Reality: Unlike the Ford Ranger or Chevy Colorado, most Nissan Frontiers do not come with a factory Integrated Trailer Brake Controller on the dashboard, even if they have the "Tow Package" (hitch and wiring).
-
The Fix: You likely have a factory port under the dash, but you need to buy the controller.
-
Best Aftermarket: We recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty. It installs with a tiny control knob that fits into one of the blank factory switch panels, looking like it came from the factory.
-
Wireless Option: The Curt Echo plugs into your 7-pin connector and uses your phone to control braking, requiring zero wiring inside the cab.
-
What Can I Tow With a Frontier?
-
Overland Trailers: The PRO-4X is built for the trail. Match it with a No Boundaries (NoBo) 19-Series or Forest River Ibex. These trailers share the Frontier’s off-road tires and high clearance, allowing you to camp where others can't.
-
Couples' Travel Trailers: With ~6,500 lbs of real-world capacity, you can tow a Rockwood Mini Lite or Grand Design Imagine XLS. These units offer a queen bed and full bathroom while staying well under the Frontier’s limit.
-
Avoid Wide-Bodies: The Frontier is a narrower truck. We recommend sticking to 7-foot wide trailers (like the Winnebago Micro Minnie) to reduce wind resistance and improve visibility without needing massive tow mirror extensions.
The "Payload Trap"
-
PRO-4X Warning: The PRO-4X trim is heavy due to skid plates and locking differentials. Its payload can dip to ~1,220 lbs.
-
The Math: A 5,000 lb trailer has a ~600 lb tongue weight. This leaves only 620 lbs for you, your passengers, and your cooler. Pack light if you drive the off-road model!
-
King Cab Advantage: If you need maximum hauling, the King Cab models offer payloads up to 1,620 lbs, giving you much more breathing room.
