The "Max Tow" Rule: 7,700 lbs vs. The Rest

Jeep advertises a "Best-in-Class" gas towing capacity of 7,700 lbs, but this only applies to one specific configuration.

• The 7,700 lb Unicorn (Sport S with Max Tow Package): To reach 7,700 lbs, you must have the Sport S trim equipped with the Max Tow Package. This package is more than just a hitch; it includes 4.10 Axle Ratios, Wider Dana 44 Axles, heavy-duty cooling, and stronger suspension.

  • Best Match: Toy Haulers or 25-foot Bunkhouses (up to 6,000 lbs loaded).

• The Rubicon & Mojave Reality (7,000 lbs): If you drive the off-road focused Rubicon or Mojave, your towing capacity is capped at 7,000 lbs (Automatic models). The softer, flexible off-road suspension that makes them great on rocks makes them slightly less stable with heavy trailers.

  • Best Match: No Boundaries (NoBo) 19-Series or Geo Pro.

• The Manual Transmission Warning (4,000 lbs): If you own a 2020–2024 Gladiator with the 6-speed Manual Transmission, your towing capacity is drastically lower—typically capped at 4,000 lbs (Sport/Overland) or 4,500 lbs (Rubicon).

  • Note: For 2025, the manual transmission was discontinued, and all models now come with the 8-speed automatic.

Generational Shift: Gas vs. Diesel

• 3.6L Pentastar V6 (Gas): The standard engine for all years. It requires high RPMs to pull heavy loads, but it offers the highest tow ratings (up to 7,700 lbs).

• 3.0L EcoDiesel (2021–2023): The EcoDiesel offers massive low-end torque (442 lb-ft), making it feel powerful on hills. However, due to cooling and engine weight, its max towing capacity is usually limited to 6,000 – 6,500 lbs. Note: The Diesel was discontinued after the 2023 model year.

What Can I Tow With a Gladiator?

• Teardrops & R-Pods: For Rubicon and Manual owners, aerodynamics are key. The Forest River R-Pod or a Teardrop Trailer stays within the lower weight limits and reduces the wind drag on the vertical Jeep windshield.

Critical Equipment: The Brake Controller

• Factory Integrated: Newer Gladiators (especially 2024+) often come with the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller as part of the "Trailer Tow and Auxiliary Switch Group". This is located in the center stack and is the best option.

• Aftermarket: If your Gladiator has a 12V outlet where the trailer brake knob should be, you must install an aftermarket controller. Our Service Department recommends the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite, which can be installed using one of the factory "knock-out" panels for a clean, OEM look.
