GMC Canyon Towing Guide: The Premium Mid-Size Hauler
The GMC Canyon is the "Professional Grade" option in the mid-size truck market. While it shares a platform with the Chevy Colorado, Canyon owners often opt for higher trims like the luxurious Denali or the trail-ready AT4.
At Leisure Days RV Group, we know that Canyon owners expect their trucks to work as hard as they play. Whether you are driving the all-new 2023+ TurboMax model or a proven Duramax Diesel, this guide will help you match your truck to the perfect trailer without exceeding your limits.

2023 – Present: The TurboMax Era
The latest generation Canyon (2023+) simplified the engine lineup but complicated the towing numbers. Every new Canyon comes with the high-output 2.7L TurboMax engine (310 hp, 430 lb-ft), but your towing capacity depends entirely on your suspension.
-
The 7,700 lb Club (Elevation, AT4, Denali): If you own an Elevation, AT4, or Denali, you have a Best-in-Class towing capacity of 7,700 lbs. The massive torque from the turbo engine makes towing feel effortless, often out-pulling older V6 models on steep grades.
-
Best Match: Grand Design Imagine XLS or Jayco Jay Feather.
-
-
The AT4X Limit (6,000 lbs): If you drive the hardcore off-road AT4X (or the AEV Edition), your towing capacity drops to 6,000 lbs (or 5,500 lbs for AEV).
-
Why? The lifted suspension, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and heavy off-road armor reduce the truck's stability for heavy towing.
-
Best Match: No Boundaries (NoBo) or Ibex off-road trailers.
-
2015 – 2022 Models: Diesel vs. V6
If you are shopping used, your engine choice dictates your capability.
-
2.8L Duramax Diesel (7,700 lbs): The "Baby Duramax" is a legend for a reason. Rated for 7,700 lbs, it offers incredible fuel economy while towing and includes a standard exhaust brake to save your pads on downhill descents.
-
3.6L V6 (7,000 lbs): The standard V6 is rated for 7,000 lbs (with the trailering package). It’s a solid performer but needs high RPMs to tackle big hills compared to the modern turbo engines.
The "ProGrade" Advantage
GMC offers towing tech usually reserved for full-size trucks.
-
Integrated Brake Controller:
-
2023+ Models: Standard on AT4X and included with the ProGrade Trailering System on AT4 and Denali. If you have an Elevation, check your build sheet—it is often an option.
-
Older Models: Many 2015–2022 Canyons do not have a factory controller. You may need to install an aftermarket unit like the Redarc Tow-Pro.
-
-
Hitch View: This camera mode gives you a top-down view of the hitch ball, making solo hookups a breeze and saving your bumper from dents.
What Can I Tow With a GMC Canyon?
-
Couples' Coaches: With 7,700 lbs of capacity, you can easily tow a Winnebago Micro Minnie or Keystone Passport. These trailers offer slide-outs and full bathrooms while staying under 5,500 lbs loaded.
-
Bunkhouses: You can step up to a Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS or similar single-axle bunk model. Just be mindful of the length—towing a 30-foot trailer with a mid-size truck can lead to significant sway.
-
Adventure Rigs: For AT4 and AT4X owners, an overlanding trailer like the Geo Pro G19FB matches your truck's capability and fits down tight trails.
The Payload Warning
Mid-size trucks have mid-size payloads.
-
The Math: Most Canyons have a payload between 1,400 – 1,600 lbs (Denali and AT4X are often lower due to luxury features and armor).
-
The Trap: If you buy a trailer with a 700 lb tongue weight, you only have ~700 lbs left for you, your passengers, and your bed cargo.
-
The Fix: We recommend a Weight Distribution Hitch for any trailer over 4,000 lbs to keep the truck level and safe.
