Ford Ranger Towing Guide: Built Ford Tough in a Mid-Size Package
The Ford Ranger is one of the most capable mid-size trucks on the market. Whether you drive the previous generation (2019–2023) or the all-new 2024+ model, the Ranger offers a "Big Truck" towing capacity that rivals some entry-level full-size pickups.
At Leisure Days RV Group, we know that Ranger owners are often weekend warriors who need a truck that fits in the garage during the week and hauls a camper on the weekend. This guide breaks down exactly what your Ranger can handle, from the workhorse XLT to the high-flying Raptor.

Know Your Capacity: 7,500 lbs vs. Raptor Limits
Unlike other trucks with dozens of confusing configurations, the Ranger lineup is surprisingly simple when it comes to towing.
-
The Standard Ranger (7,500 lbs): Almost every Ford Ranger—whether it has the 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinder or the new 2.7L EcoBoost V6—is rated for a massive 7,500 lbs when equipped with the Trailer Tow Package.
This applies to both the 2019–2023 models and the 2024+ generation. -
The Advantage: This 7,500 lb rating is higher than the Toyota Tacoma (6,500 lbs) and Nissan Frontier (6,700 lbs), giving you access to larger bunkhouse trailers.
-
-
The Ranger Raptor (5,510 lbs):
If you own the high-performance Raptor (2024+), your towing capacity is capped at 5,510 lbs. The specialized Fox Live Valve suspension that allows you to jump dunes is too soft for heavy trailer tongues. -
Best Match: Rugged off-road trailers like the No Boundaries (NoBo) or Ibex.
-
The "Package" Confusion: Trailer Tow vs. Advanced Towing
Just because you see a hitch doesn't mean you are ready to go.
-
Trailer Tow Package (53R): This is the basic requirement. It includes the Class IV Hitch Receiver and the 4-pin/7-pin Wiring Harness.
Without this, you are limited to bumper towing (3,500 lbs). -
Advanced Towing Package: Available on newer models (2024+), this adds the high-tech features: Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Trailer Reverse Guidance, and typically the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller.
Critical Equipment: The Brake Controller
-
2024 – Present: Ford finally added an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller to the dashboard (often part of the Advanced Towing Package).
If you have this factory switch, you are ready to tow trailers with electric brakes. -
2019 – 2023 Models: Most Rangers from this generation did not come with a factory brake controller. To tow a travel trailer legally, you must install one. Our Service Department recommends the Redarc Tow-Pro, which installs with a factory-style knob, or the Ford Accessory controller.
What Can I Tow With a Ford Ranger?
-
Spacious Bunkhouses (Standard Ranger): With 7,500 lbs of capacity, you can tow family-sized units like the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH or Grand Design Imagine XLS.
These trailers offer slide-outs and full dry baths while weighing under 5,500 lbs loaded. -
The Raptor Match: Raptor owners should look at "Overland" style trailers. A Geo Pro G19FB or Taxa Mantis matches the Raptor’s off-road capability and fits within the 5,510 lb limit.
-
Payload Awareness: While the Ranger can pull 7,500 lbs, watch your payload. A standard Ranger has a payload of ~1,700–1,800 lbs, but the Raptor drops to ~1,400 lbs. If you have a Raptor, avoid heavy tongue weights to keep your suspension from bottoming out.
Ford’s Towing Tech
-
Pro Trailer Backup Assist: If equipped, this system allows you to steer the trailer in reverse by turning a small knob on the dash while the truck handles the steering wheel. It’s a game-changer for beginners backing into tight campsites.
-
Blind Spot with Trailer Coverage: On Lariat and XLT models, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) can be programmed to cover the length of your trailer, warning you if a car is hiding in your trailer’s blind spot.
