Know Your Power: Gas vs. Duramax

For the 2024+ model years, Chevy leveled the playing field: Both engines now come with the legendary Allison 10-Speed Transmission.

• 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel (The Towing King):

  • The Stats: 470 hp / 975 lb-ft torque.

  • Max Towing: Up to 36,000 lbs.

  • The Advantage: This engine is a mountain-crusher. The massive torque allows you to accelerate uphill with a 20,000 lb trailer, while the exhaust brake keeps you safe on the way down.

  • Best Match: Luxe Fifth Wheels, DRV Mobile Suites, or 44-foot Toy Haulers.

• 6.6L Gas V8 (The Payload King):

  • The Stats: 401 hp / 464 lb-ft torque.

  • Max Towing: ~18,700 – 19,000 lbs.

  • The Secret Weapon: The gas engine is significantly lighter than the diesel. This gives a properly equipped Silverado 3500 Gas Dually a massive Payload Capacity (over 7,200 lbs). If you want to carry a massive Truck Camper in the bed, the gas model is often the superior choice.

The ZR2 & Bison Factor

Uniquely, Chevy offers the ZR2 and ZR2 Bison trims on the 3500 HD.

• The Capability: These trucks feature Multimatic DSSV dampers and factory lifts for severe off-roading.

• The Trade-off: While incredible off-road, the softer suspension and heavy armor slightly reduce towing stability compared to a standard High Country or LTZ. Max towing on a ZR2 is typically capped around 18,500 lbs.

Single Rear Wheel (SRW) vs. Dually (DRW)

• SRW (Single Rear Wheel): Great for daily driving. Max towing usually tops out around 20,000 lbs. However, with big fifth wheels, you will often run out of payload capacity (pin weight limits) before you hit your max towing weight.

• DRW (Dually): The "Dually" provides four rear tires to eliminate sway and support massive pin weights. If your trailer weighs over 16,000 lbs, we highly recommend a Dually for the ultimate towing experience.

The "Multi-Flex Tailgate" Warning

This is the most critical warning for new Chevy owners.

• The Feature: The Multi-Flex tailgate folds down into a step, offering great access to the bed.

• The Trap: If you have a ball hitch in your receiver and you deploy the inner step, it will crash into your hitch ball, putting a massive dent in your tailgate.

• The Fix: You must buy a specific hitch that provides clearance, or install a "Tailgate Saver" sensor (available at our Parts Counter) to lock the step when towing.

Chevy’s "Invisible" Tech

Chevy’s Advanced Trailering System removes the blind spots from towing.

• Transparent Trailer View: By mounting an accessory camera on the back of your RV, the truck stitches the video feed to make your trailer look "invisible" on the screen. You can see cars following right on your bumper.

• Adaptive Cruise with Trailering: The truck accounts for the drag and braking distance of your trailer, allowing you to use Cruise Control safely on long highway stretches.
