Tesla Model X Towing Guide: The Electric Hauler
The Tesla Model X is an engineering marvel. With instant torque and a heavy battery pack keeping the center of gravity low, it is arguably one of the most stable towing platforms on the road. It doesn't sway, it climbs mountains effortlessly, and it regenerates energy on the way down.
However, towing with an EV requires a completely different mindset than towing with a gas truck. At Leisure Days RV Group, we help EV owners navigate the three critical hurdles: Range, Payload, and Charging.

The Capability: 5,000 lbs (With an Asterisk)
Tesla advertises a robust towing capacity, but your wheel choice matters.
-
20-Inch Wheels: Rated for the full 5,000 lbs.
-
22-Inch Turbine Wheels: Often reduced to 3,500 lbs.
Check your specific owner's manual! -
Tongue Weight: Limited to 500 lbs (20" wheels).
This is your hard ceiling.
The "Payload Trap": Read This First
This is where most families get into trouble.
-
The Problem: The Model X is heavy (due to the battery).
This eats up your Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). -
The Math: Most Model X vehicles have a payload sticker (in the door jamb) of 1,000 – 1,300 lbs.
-
The Reality: A family of 4 (600 lbs) + Luggage (100 lbs) leaves only 300–600 lbs for the trailer tongue.
-
The Rule: You generally cannot tow a 5,000 lb travel trailer with a family in the car, because the tongue weight (typically ~600+ lbs for a 5k trailer) will put you over the legal payload limit.
The Range Reality: The "50% Rule"
Physics is unavoidable. Towing a square box (travel trailer) at 100 km/h kills efficiency.
-
Expectation: You will lose 30% to 50% of your rated range while towing.
-
Aerodynamics > Weight: A 3,000 lb aerodynamic teardrop will tow further than a 2,000 lb boxy cargo trailer. Wind resistance is the enemy, not weight.
-
Planning: If your Model X has a 500 km range, plan to stop every 200–250 km to charge.
The Charging Reality
Supercharging while towing is the biggest inconvenience.
-
Pull-Throughs are Rare: Most Superchargers are "back-in" spots. You will likely have to unhitch your trailer to charge, then re-hitch to leave.
-
The Strategy: Look for "Pull-Through" chargers on apps like PlugShare, or plan your charging stops around meal breaks so the unhitching process feels less like a chore.
Essential Equipment: The Missing Brake Controller
-
The Surprise: Despite the high-tech screen, the Model X does not have an integrated trailer brake controller for aftermarket trailers.
-
The Solution: You must install one to safely tow anything over 2,000 lbs.
-
Wireless (Recommended): The Curt Echo or Tekonsha Prodigy iD are perfect for Teslas. They plug into the 7-pin connector and use your smartphone as the controller. No drilling into your minimalist dashboard!
-
Hardwired: There is a pigtail connector hidden under the dash, but accessing it requires removing trim panels.
-
What Can I Tow With a Model X?
Aerodynamics are everything.
-
Teardrop Trailers: Models like the nuCamp T@B 400 or Little Guy Max offer hard walls and bathrooms but stay tucked behind the Model X's slipstream.
-
Pop-Up Campers: A Rockwood Freedom or SylvanSport GO folds down completely flat. These have almost zero impact on range compared to full-height trailers.
