The "Drive" vs. The "Stay"

• The "Touring" Snowbird: If you plan to spend two weeks in Myrtle Beach, a month in Daytona, and a month in the Keys, you want a Motorhome.

  • Why: Setup is instant. You don't have to unhitch. A Class A Diesel Pusher provides air-ride suspension, making the multi-day drive from Canada incredibly smooth. Plus, you have access to your own bathroom and fridge at every rest stop.

• The "Parked" Snowbird: If you drive straight to your favorite resort in Fort Myers or Zephyrhills and stay there until April, you want a Fifth Wheel.

  • Why: Once unhitched, you have your truck for daily errands (grocery runs, golf). You get significantly more living space and ceiling height for your dollar compared to a motorhome, and maintenance is lower since there is no engine.

Must-Have Florida Features

• Dual A/C Units: Florida can get hot, even in February. A single air conditioner often struggles to cool a 35-foot RV. Look for units with 50-Amp Service and two A/C units to ensure you sleep cool.

• Washer/Dryer Prep: Spending 4 months in a laundromat is not a vacation. Ensure your unit has a closet prepped for a stackable or combo washer/dryer.

• Large Awnings: You will be living outside. Look for Power Awnings with LED lights (and ideally a second awning on slide-outs) to create a shaded patio sanctuary.

Top Snowbird Models

• Newmar / Entegra (Class A Diesel): These coaches are built for the long haul. They feature heavy insulation (which keeps the A/C cold in) and massive towing capacity for bringing a car (toad) behind you.

• Keystone Montana (Fifth Wheel): The "Wide Body" chassis offers extra interior width, making the kitchen and living room feel like a stationary home.

• Jayco Seneca (Super C): A growing favorite. It has the power of a semi-truck front end (safer in a crash) but the luxury interior of a Class A.

Pre-Trip Checklist

• Tires: The heat of the south and the distance of the drive are hard on tires. Check the age (DOT date code) of your tires before leaving Canada.

• Insurance: Verify your RV insurance covers you for 6 months in the USA.

• Filter for Luxury: Use the filters above to look for "Rear Living" layouts or "Class A Diesels" to find the most comfortable rigs for your winter escape.
